My vocal range turned out to be a critical project, though I actually started out just to learn to sing well. But in the process, I had to tackle range.
When I started out training my voice, I had songs I was attracted to and thus propelled to follow. It was more about the songs than the artist because (sometimes) the artists were consistent with their style or pattern and that was too restrictive for me. The few artists I was consistent with were: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. There were some others I found helpful too: Crystal Lewis, Yolanda Adams, two particular singers from the Kurt Karr group - can’t remember their names. And later, I found Enya, Dido and Labrinth.
If I were to stick to one artist, it would be Celine Dion because of her soprano and energy; but because I needed support for my off-pitch Whitney and Mariah were important. However, through the process, I’ve ‘encountered’ some other artists whose voice helped me still, e.g. Georgia Brown, Leona Lewis, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Adele and very recently Serena Onasis.
However, this doesn’t mean that these artists were or are the best in the world, or had the best arrangements. It’s just that they had what I needed to help me grow vocal wise. Certainly, they were and are some other artists I sing along with at different times that I don’t even know their names.
Finally, though with a great vocal range, I aim for great artistry.
Cheers
